A Forgotten Gem

Our West African project zones are based within the Mbe, Afi and Okwangwo mountain ranges, traversing the Southern border of Cameroon and Nigeria. Our choice of location was determined by the conspicuous absence of conservation work in the region, despite it potentially containing the richest rainforest biodiversity in West Africa.

In addition to the remarkable and unique fauna and flora, the region is also home to numerous extremely rare species, such as the Cross River gorilla (the rarest great ape on the planet), the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (the rarest chimpanzee sub-species on the planet), the drill and many more.

A Lost Cause?

Though much of the area has been designated as protected conservation land, the border region is experiencing its fastest rates of deforestation it has ever seen, courtesy of International timber companies and local farm encroachment.

Our hope is that by spearheading conservation efforts in the area our work will attract the attention of more established conservation organisations, leading to a greater awareness of the need for conservation on the Nigerian-Cameroonian border.
